The atmosphere was incredible at St John the Evangelist church in Kingston-upon-Thames for a special performance to raise money for the refurbishment of the building. The soft candlelight added to the experience. It started with the Angelic voice of local star Annie Grace-Smith, who was accompanied by Dave Miller on guitar. They dedicated their set to the memory of Rob Skivington, a kind-hearted friend and very talented musician/songwriter, who sadly passed away in Dec 2007. They also included some of Rob's own songs.

Next up was Andrew Morris, who sings and play guitar. He played some of his own songs from the E.P. "Upside Down" as well as a couple of new ones. Performing both as a solo artist and with a backing band.

Come down to this charming restored art-deco theatre, and get into the christmas spirit with one of the best folk-rock bands around. Although there was only almost 100 brave souls, who had battled through the wind and rain to be in the audience, they still knew how to party and spread out to fill the stalls. Many had Santa hats, and some were even flashing, the hats that is, not the people. A huge cheer went up as the band arrived on stage. We were treated to quite a show, consisting of many of their own songs from their two L.P.s, "Undressed" and "Ghosts of Wasted Chances", and those on the new Christmas E.P "Christmas 'Round Ours", which are all available either from gigs, or from Borders, HMV, Amazon, Play.com. These were interwoven with a selection of readings and a good dose of laughter. After the interval, they continued with a few covers, the classic "Fairytale of New York" and "Santa Claus is coming to town".

Musical - Lost and Found 5-8th Sept

This new original musical, currently being composed by two local songwriters and in rehearsal tells the story of a museum faced with imminent closure, and the stories of a group of people who are brought together by the events that unfold. A lighthearted musical comedy, covering the high's and lows of everyday life, a real family show. The performers will be several accomplised actors, including Karina Jane (Grace), Jake Wallis (Alfie), Jessica Brake (Desdemona), Stuart Guest (Hank), Jon Hubbard (Felix), Alex Neumann (Lewis) Chris Knights (Dale), Samantha Clark (Brenyth), Luke Stapleton (Tramp), who are affiliated to most, if not all of the local drama & theatre groups.

WeyFest 2007 - 1st-2nd September 2007

This open-air event was blessed with good weather. The Rural Life Centre, near Tilford has a wonderful 10-acre site with a multitude of old wooden buildings and a museum-like collection of thousands of antique farm and transport machinery. It was started in 1973 by Mr and Mrs Jackson. They have many volunteers who give demonstrations of typical village life and interactive activites for children, as well as a train ride and playground to add some fun to the learning experience. There was 3 stages, The Villages Green (VG), the largest was a 4-foot high raised platform with an inflatabe arch over the top, The Old Kiln (OK), an 18 by 6 foot marquee, and the Rustic (R) (acoustic) inside one of the traditional buildings. They were situated just far enough away from each other to only hear the one you were at, though this mean't quite a bit of walking back and forth, to see a little bit of everyone. I have reviewed them in chronological order.

Saturday 1st September

IM'N'IM (VG), This is a jam band, usually made up of any musicians who happen to be available at the time, including Richie Ellmer (Solid Juice) and Dave Jull (Mushrooms).

Johnny Parish and the Midnight Mass (OK),

Kindred Spirit (VG), This folky-rock band never fail to get the audience in a good mood. There are not many bands on the circuit with both a saxophonist and a violinist.

Steve Smith (R),

Project BlueBeam (VG), These guys really rock, just ask anyone who has seen them play either as covers band Koopa Troopa, or like here with there own material.

Tim Sturdy (OK)?, Tim Green (R),

Warblefly (VG), A great bid band sound, including Bodhran (an irish drum), accordion.

4Play (OK), This jazzy/blues band featues Colin Webb (guitar/vocals, formerly of the gerbs), Simon Callow (Keyboards/vocals, and not from 4 weddings/Dickins), Russ Brown (bass guitar/vocals), and adding some glamour, Helleanor Webb (saxophone, flute/vocals). They perform a mixture of covers and some of their own songs.

David Rowley (R), True Deceivers, The (VG), Solid Juice (OK), Jim Kelleher (R),

Something 4 The Weekend (OK), This is the wedding/function band of Vic Cracknell (keyboards), who runs vic's buskers (open mic nights).

Paul King (VG), Back in the 60s, Paul King played with bands such as "The Russian Front" and "The Good Earth" who later changed their name to Mungo Jerry. In the 70s with "Jigilo Jug Band" and "Rhode Island Red". By the 1980s he was performing with "Nightshift" and "Outside Edge". In the 90s, he re-joined the King Earl Boogie Band till retiring in 1996. He has recently made a sucessful comeback to the music scene.

Bo And Abbe (R), Two very talented young ladies, who write and perform their own songs. Bo sings and Abbe plays guitar.

Jackie Lynton Band, The (VG), There can't be many veteran rockers, who can claim to have painted for John Lennon, and written jokes for Jim Davidson. He performed for many years with Savoy Brown, before setting up his own band in the 1970s. They have played at the Reading Festival and on TVs Old Grey Whistle Test.

Susie Clarke Band (R), Susie performs a selection of her own songs and some covers, ably assisted by Rich Austin (guitar) and Adam Knight (Cajan).

Civilized Tears (OK),

Andy Wilson-Taylor (R), This young musician sings and plays Guitar (live) with added pre-programmed electronic and electro-acoustic effects. His new E.P. "Seraph" should be available soon.

Leatherat (OK), Darren "Indi" Fisher (R), The Nashville Teens (VG), Flying Tigers, The (OK), Rupert Oxlade (R), Tim Cheatle (R)?, Oliver Webb (R), Steve Gibbons Band (VG).

Sunday 2nd September

HedswitcH (OK), Something for all the metal fans, who could've been there. This band features J.C. Storm (lead guitar/vocals), Ben Black (bass guitar/vocals) and Jelly (Drums).

This event was sponsored by the Lion Brewery and held from 11am to 7pm at Harper's recreation ground, Guildford Road, Ash, Surrey (opposite the Lion Brewery public house). There were various other attractions and side stalls for all the family. It is an annual charity event raising money for the Beating Bowel Cancer Campaign. This years line-up included Stroking the Toad (replacing Big Dog and the Bite), Rainmaker, Crash n Burn, Blue Touch, On Fire, Lemon Pie. The total raised on the day was £1900.

This event is an all day music festival, and will take place in the grounds of the Saddlers Arms public house in Send Marsh, near Woking, Surrey on the 14th July 2007. The live music covers the Rock, Pop and Acoustic genres, and features many young, and some not so young local musicians. There are 2 stages, electric and acoustic, the music was alternating between them. This years line-up, is basically the same as last year's, as most of the band members are locals to the venue, but they'll be playing some different songs, honest. First on stage were 4 young ladies Sophie Gibbs, Emily Bothem, Jess Rowley with guitars and Bethany Fisher on Drums, going under the title Something About Buckets. This was entertaining although they had a backing track. This was followed by a rousing performance by Executive Relief. Then came Funktion, with the sweet and soulful voice of Rachel Brennan on lead vocals. Next up on the acoustic stage were the Kickstarts featuring Judith McGuigan on vocals, Eugene McGuigan (guitar), Chris Goulding (guitar and vocals), Ged Wade (bass guitar) and Keith Goulding (Drums). They played some classics from the 50's, 60's and 70's. Then we stepped up a gear with the monkey antics of Flying Tigers, The and some good old rhythm and blues. Next it was the return of Clampers, The with an always popular Oasis anthem. This non-stop musical extravaganza continued with New Dogs Old Tricks, featuring the vocal talents of Julia K and Jules Manning, with Val Delaurenzy (guitar), Keith 'MC' Rosetti (guitar), Kim Wallis (bass guitar) and Richard Blandford (drums). By this time the show was already running late, so One Night Only's set was cut. Then it was time for Magnum. That big band sound really got the crowd going. This was followed by Govnor, The featuring the landlord of the Saddler's Arms, Clive Dunford (guitar and vocals), Peter Firmo (bass guitar and vocals), and Matt Blair (drums and vocals). Next up were the youngsters from No Way off the Roof, who had been such a hit at last year's event. Then it was back again to the classics by the beatles and rod stewart with Elderley Brothers, The. Next up were Sultana. Although time was running out fast, we had the grand fanale with a few numbers from Lost Galacticos. The day was a great success and we managed to raise a total of £4,278. This will be divided (a little unequally, I must say), with £2,674 going to Ripley Scouts, and £1,604 to Ripley Brownees.

There are studios in all of the eleven districts that make up the county, Elmbridge, Epson & Ewell, Guildford, Mole Valley, Reigate and Banstead, Runnymede, Spellthorne, Surrey Heath, Tandridge, Waverley, Woking. Most will be open betwwen 12pm to 6pm and untill 8.30pm on Thursdays. You can find out more about the artists, workshops and links to local arts organisations on the Open Studios 2007 website. The workshops are ever more popular and this year there will be 16 workshops on offer to the public. These include an introduction to feltmaking, glass fusing, indigo dyeing, stone carving, and woodturning.

A very colourful performance by this talented troup of Acrobats, jugglers, and dancers. Long gone are the days of lion-tamers and elephants and clowns. Though the body of the narrator in this show has a passing resemblance to a clown, but without all the slipstick. The show is divided into many 2-3 minute segments hightlighting the different skills. These include the Big Banner Juggling, Bow Bending and Giant Sword, Chinese Lion Dance, Dancing Dragons, Flying Daggers, Hoop Diving, Human Candelabra Contortionist, Jar Jugglers, Mystery Known as 100 Faces, Peking Opera, Pole Jumping, Slack Wire Walking, and the world famous Shoalin Wu-Shu Warriors. Although some of the swords used in the sinuated fighting sequences apeared to be made of foil covered cardboard, many of the other props used were authenticated by the audience members in the front row.
