World Music Party 30th November 2006

This month's World Music Party at the Boileroom in Guildford has a Celtic theme. But please don't come dressed in a green hooped jersey, as this is Celtic with a hard, not a soft C. Exploring the traditional scottish and Irish blend of fast-paced rhythmic music.

Ensembles Concert 29th November 2006

Sometimes less is definitely more! Student conductors direct an entertaining and diverse programme of classical works for ensembles and small orchestras. A chance to hear an interesting range of works played with enthusiasm and verve.

UoS Students’ Union Wind Band 27th November 2006

The USSU Wind Band returns for another end of term extravaganza, performing a variety of favourites from show songs to especially composed wind band pieces. The concert will feature student conductors and soloists. Anticipate a fun evening.

Magnum in Ripley 25th November 2006

Last Saturday night, Ripley Village Hall was the place to be as Magnum rocked the house with their big band sound. This Charity Dance in aid of The British Ski Club for the Disabled and DSUK was a chance to enjoy some great live music all in a good cause. The evening started with the Elderly Brothers, who gave us some classic Beatles tunes along with duelling banjos from the movie "deliverance". Then they invited Peter Fairbrass on stage for a couple on Johnny Cash numbers, Folsom Prison Blues and I Walk the Line. This got the crowd warmed up and during the short intermission, while the bands swaped over, the winning raffle numbers were called.

Frank Harrison Trio 24th November 2006

Thought-provoking and intense, Frank Harrison (piano) displays an extraordinary musicality which is surprisingly mature for his age. The music is original, thoughtful, delicate and imbued with texture and colour. Featuring Aidan O'Donnell (bass) and Stephen Keogh (drums).

Kingston Chamber Orchestra 18th November 2006

This performance in Kingston Parish Church, Market Square, Kingston upon Thames is of Overture 'Egmont' (Beethoven) : Flute Sonata (Poulenc Berkeley) : Galanta Dances (Kodaly) : Symphony No 2 (Simpson) : Encore Une Fois (Meyers) for the first time in the UK.

Lol Coxhill 17th November 2006

Soprano sax maverick Lol Coxhill has touched on nearly every area of music over the past half century, after playing with Rufus Thomas, Alexis Korner, Campion Jack Dupree, Bobby Wellins, Stan Tracey, Steve Miller, Kevin Ayers, Rico Rodrigues and Jazz Jamaica and even The Damned. Today he plays with John Edwards (bass) and Steve Noble (drums). 'There are very few versatile artists that hold the importance Lox Coxhill has in European improvised music' (Francois Couture, All Music Guide).

Mike Westbrook's Village Band 10th November 2006

Featuring Mike Westbrook (euphonium), Kate Westbrook (voice/tenor horn), Gary Bayley (tenor saxophone), Stan Willis (alto saxophone), Mike Brewer (trumpet) and Sam Smith (trombone). Four leading Devonian musicians join the internationally acclaimed composer and performers Mike and Kate Westbrook to form the Village Band Project. The Waxeywork Show is an original piece by Mike Westbrook for voice and acoustic brass, specially created for the group, featuring lyrics and vocals by Kate Westbrook. In All that Jazz, the band performs Mike Westbrook's arrangements of classic jazz instrumentals, songs, blues and rags. The programme includes Scott Joplin, Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus and many more. 'Mike Westbrook is one of Britain's most creative, experimental and daring jazz composers' (Times).

13th Woking Beer Festival 10-11th November 2006

This Annual event is held at Woking Leisure Centre and is supported by The Campaign for Real Ale (CamRA) who's members will recieve a free pint. There will be 3 sessions over the 2 days - from 6pm-11pm on the Friday night and 11am-3:30pm and 6pm-11pm on the Saturday. Over 70 real ales plus Beers and Ciders and food. Background music from the Wurlitzer, with live bands for the evening sessions. Please note that this event is 100% no smoking.
