Surrey Open Studios 2-17 June 2007
Now in its eighth year, this annual event offers a glinse inside the working studios of the many artists in Surrey. This year the project has attracted a record 245 participants. There are studios in all of the eleven districts that make up the county, Elmbridge, Epson & Ewell, Guildford, Mole Valley, Reigate and Banstead, Runnymede, Spellthorne, Surrey Heath, Tandridge, Waverley, Woking. Most will be open betwwen 12pm to 6pm and untill 8.30pm on Thursdays. You can find out more about the artists, workshops and links to local arts organisations on the Open Studios 2007 website. The workshops are ever more popular and this year there will be 16 workshops on offer to the public. These include an introduction to feltmaking, glass fusing, indigo dyeing, stone carving, and woodturning.

Chinese State Circus 14th Dec 2006-14th Mar 2007
A very colourful performance by this talented troup of Acrobats, jugglers, and dancers. Long gone are the days of lion-tamers and elephants and clowns. Though the body of the narrator in this show has a passing resemblance to a clown, but without all the slipstick. The show is divided into many 2-3 minute segments hightlighting the different skills. These include the Big Banner Juggling, Bow Bending and Giant Sword, Chinese Lion Dance, Dancing Dragons, Flying Daggers, Hoop Diving, Human Candelabra Contortionist, Jar Jugglers, Mystery Known as 100 Faces, Peking Opera, Pole Jumping, Slack Wire Walking, and the world famous Shoalin Wu-Shu Warriors. Although some of the swords used in the sinuated fighting sequences apeared to be made of foil covered cardboard, many of the other props used were authenticated by the audience members in the front row.

Painshill Park in Cobham is offering free entry every Wednesday during January and February to residents of Surrey. This is one of the most important 18th Century parks in Europe and has a beautiful 160 acre landscape with a gothic temple and a romantic ruined abbey. The Painshill tearoom will be offering a range of light refreshments and award-winning wines from the painshill vineyard. Dogs on a lead are welcome in the park and proof of residence will be required at the ticket office to take advantage of this offer.

Best of One Night Stand - Acoustic 19th January 2007
A this Best of One Night Stand event, were six of the favourite acts from previous One Night Stand events. By way of a warmup, and an added bonus, we were treated to another couple of numbers by Mateusz, a jazz pianist from Poland. See photo.
JO COLLINS: This bright young star started off with 2 of her own songs, “Reality” and “Bed of Roses” on the electric keyboard. Her sultry singing style and powerful voice, reminiscent of Eddie Reader and Alicia Keys, some of her main influences, and its was a cover of Ms Keys “If I Ain’t Got You” that she performed next. Then came 2 other covers James Morrison’s “You Give Me Something” and Christina Aguilera’s “Underappreciated”. See photo.
MICHAEL BERK: This young man plays instrumental guitar. His first track was his own composition called “F**k All Reviewers”. Then came a cover of “Yes in Deed” by Si Oliver, a very soulful melody. This was followed by one of his own called “The Return” and Louis Armstrong’s classic “What a Wonderful World”. Then another of his own “Bells” and finished with “Danny Boy”. See photo.
ROLAND CHADWICK: Perhaps he turned-up believing that this was a comedy stand-up night, or was it the passing resemblance to Billy Connolly, but he instantly made the audience feel part of the act. He started with 3 of his own songs “Jenny's Sunday, “Laughing Spinoza” and “Betty Keft”. Then a cover of Big Joe Williams’ “Baby Please Don’t Go” and finished with Led Zeppelin’s “Bron-y-Aur Stomp”. THE BALLINSKY PROJECT: Nathan Ball plays the guitar, and looks a little like Captain Jack Sparrow on a GHD, but don't hold that against him. He is ably accompanied by Adrianne Wallinsky. If you’ve ever dreamt like me, of Nicole Kidman playing the cello, then come see Adrianne. They played 5 of their own songs “assumptions”, “rhetoricism”, “sky trees”, “6 by 4” and “Points mean Prizes”. They have a CD available called “Ctrl-Z Session” with 9 tracks. The name as every geek will know is from the computer keyboard shortcut command for undo. See photos.
THE SAM PAINE TRIO: This 3-piece band has Sam Paine and Ben Owens on Guitar and John Hillier on the drums. They played 1 cover of Jack Johnson’s “Waiting Wishing” and 5 songs written by Sam Paine, “Lightning”, “No Regrets”, “Travelling Man”, “Sky's Crying”, and “Hold on Me” the latter 3 can be found on his Solo acoustic CD called "Travelling Man". DAVID IMRIE TRIO: This band has David Imrie on Lead vocals and guitar, Robert Illesh on Mandolin and Banjo, and Ben Kidds on the double bass. They started 6 songs from their forthcoming as yet untitled album, “Back to the Country”, “Until the Sun Shines”, “Mountain Song”, “The Wild Horses”, “Man O Woe” and “A Spirit Wandering”. Along with a cover of Ray LaMontagne’s “Trouble”.Sadly by this time the disco had started downstairs and the floor was vibrating. See photos.

One Night Stand - Acoustic 16th January 2007
Review: This showcase event in the ONSA series was held at the Jagz club in Ascot, Berkshire. There were 11 acts on the bill, some experienced performers and others debuting.
MATEUSZ: First to take the stage was a Polish jazz pianist, a very talented young man who knew how to play with his organ, a roland electronic keyboard, that is. He played 3 tunes.
FINCH: an aurburn-haired 30-something, with an acoustic guitar, she played 2 of her own songs, ??? and ???, and a Scissor Sisters's cover "Take your mama out tonight".
RICHARD HINGLEY: middle-aged and follicly challenged, but he certainly could play the guitar, again with 2 of his own songs, "Questions and answers", and "In another world", and a playlist favourite Neil Young's "Rocking in the free world".
CLAIRE McAULEY: She has played here before. Blonde shoulder length hair and the style and vocal range of Joni Mitchell. She played 3 of her own songs, Brookline, nameless and The Beatles's "Ob-La-Di".
MIDNIGHT RIDER: 3 guys with guitars including 1 with an electric bass, so much for acoustic, and a drummer. The name of the band, as any of you who know your American history will know, comes from Paul Revere's ride from Charlestown to Lexington. They played 3 of their own songs, "Don't let the world become undone", "Let you go", and "100 miles an hour".
CHRIS REED: A young man from New Zealand, playing his first set in this country, his 3 songs were "Broken", "Silence", and "Stay with me".
GILL HOLDSWORTH: a pretty young lady with light brown/dark blonde and a guitar, who played 3 tracks with no vocals, including U2's "With or without you". This got a laugh from those in the crowd who knew that the nights MC, Mark, fronts U2 tribute band Blood Red Sky.
LINDSAY WEST: a friend of Claire McAuley, she played 2 of her own songs.
JIM KELLEHER: who also played and picked the guitar without vocals, in the Jose Gonzalez style. He played 2 of his own songs, "Eye of the storm", and "Twist", and another playlist favourite, but still a great track Nirvana's "Smells like teen spirit".
BIKINI BACK SPECIAL: An oddly named band and oddly dressed too, both in coats, one with a russian hat who played the guitar and another perched on a high stool, playing the tom toms and marakas. Weird, but kind of wonderful.
CONCEPT: who started off with just the lead vocalist and a guest keyboard player, Alice, for a charming melody "Stupid Sacrifice". Then the singer picked up his guitar and was joined by another guitarist and a female flutist, for "Wrecking what I have". Their last track was "Hero of my soul".
Altogether it was a great evening of live acoustic music.

Flag Project - Yinka Shonibare 9th January 2007
This project provides a platform for international artists to reflect on ideas associated with flags, from patriotism and national identity to pageantry and celebration. The raising of Yinka Shonibare's specially commissioned flag responding to the situation in the Middle East. The raising of the flag will be accompanied by Andrew Crowley performing Charles Ives' The Unanswered Question and a performance by poet Kat Francois. After there will be a panel debate with Richard Cork, Gilane Tawadros and Yinka Shonibare on art and conflict follows the flag raising in the Hayward Pavilion.This is the first in an ongoing series of artist-designed flags and part of a wider initiative of temporary outdoor artworks across the site.

XMAS Film Festival 27th-30th December 2006
Come and chill out with friends and watch some great movies. Four nights of trilogies. On the first night (27th Dec) there was the "Back to the Future" trilogy. Maybe the residents of Guildford were all partied out or the fact that the films had been on TV so recently, contributed to the low turnout, or perhaps nobody believes anything can be FREE these days. The Second night (28th Dec) started with the classic "Raider's of the Lost Ark". It will be regreted for all time that someone had to make the silly Indiana Jones sequels. It was good that you could leave mid-film without the need to disturb the whole row. On the third night (29th Dec) we had the equally classic Terminator 1 & 2. Yes I know its a trilogy too, but surely the Governor of California (Arnold Schwarzenegger) knows more about politics, than about how not to flog a dead horse. The grand finale (30th Dec) to this Xmas Film Festival was the grandfather of all trilogies "Star Wars". OK its now technically a Hexalogy, though as I'm sure most true fans would agree the recent extended merchanising commercials are hardly worthy of the Saga's name. It was great to see the original trilogy back to back, though this was the slightly doctored movies, now known as IV, V, and VI, with links to the prequels mentioned above. Sitting on a comfy leather sofa, with a pint in one hand and some free popcorn in the other, made this festival quite an experience, Its just a shame that more people weren't there to enjoy it.

Christmas Folk Special 17th December 2006
As the party season gets underway, theres nothing better than chilling out with friends and some great music. The evening started with a performance by Deborah Clarke, in the current trend of pretty young talented ladies with guitars. She writes her own songs and has released an E.P. (Arise) with the help of her musical family, many of whom play together as a band. Then came the first set of the night by Megson. This male-female duo originate from up north, near middlesborough, but are now based in London. The band features Debbie Palmer on lead vocals and tin whistle, and Stuart Hanna on guitar and Mandolin. They played a selection of their own songs including, Floodwater, Freefall, Just as the tide, Rose on the stem and Smoke of home. During the interval while they had a break, Steve Bradfield (from local band Radiate) played guitar. A soulful rendition of Dylan's "All along the Watchtower" and Johnny Cash haunting melody "Hurt" with a couple of his own songs. Although there didn't seem to be a whole lot of Christmas in this Folk Special, Megson finished up with "Santa Claus is coming to town" and pulled a cracker.

Magnum in Ripley 25th November 2006
Last Saturday night, Ripley Village Hall was the place to be as Magnum rocked the house with their big band sound. This Charity Dance in aid of The British Ski Club for the Disabled and DSUK was a chance to enjoy some great live music all in a good cause. The evening started with the Elderly Brothers, who gave us some classic Beatles tunes along with duelling banjos from the movie "deliverance". Then they invited Peter Fairbrass on stage for a couple on Johnny Cash numbers, Folsom Prison Blues and I Walk the Line. This got the crowd warmed up and during the short intermission, while the bands swaped over, the winning raffle numbers were called.

Lol Coxhill 17th November 2006
Soprano sax maverick Lol Coxhill has touched on nearly every area of music over the past half century, after playing with Rufus Thomas, Alexis Korner, Campion Jack Dupree, Bobby Wellins, Stan Tracey, Steve Miller, Kevin Ayers, Rico Rodrigues and Jazz Jamaica and even The Damned. Today he plays with John Edwards (bass) and Steve Noble (drums). 'There are very few versatile artists that hold the importance Lox Coxhill has in European improvised music' (Francois Couture, All Music Guide).

Mike Westbrook's Village Band 10th November 2006
Featuring Mike Westbrook (euphonium), Kate Westbrook (voice/tenor horn), Gary Bayley (tenor saxophone), Stan Willis (alto saxophone), Mike Brewer (trumpet) and Sam Smith (trombone). Four leading Devonian musicians join the internationally acclaimed composer and performers Mike and Kate Westbrook to form the Village Band Project. The Waxeywork Show is an original piece by Mike Westbrook for voice and acoustic brass, specially created for the group, featuring lyrics and vocals by Kate Westbrook. In All that Jazz, the band performs Mike Westbrook's arrangements of classic jazz instrumentals, songs, blues and rags. The programme includes Scott Joplin, Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus and many more. 'Mike Westbrook is one of Britain's most creative, experimental and daring jazz composers' (Times).

Halloween charity gig 28th October 2006
This event is taking place at the Jurgen Center, Englefield Green in aid of Associacao Amazonia. Featuring performances by Aspex : Bob : Second Time Around : Whisky G's. Last year you helped a young guy called Alcinei (see previous event) by raising over £3,000. He now with our help has a confirmed appointment for the operation with the leading surgeon in Sao Paulo. When Bob visited the Reserve in January, construction on a crèche /school was in process. It desparetly needs more funding to complete and stock with equipment, so they have asked BOB and friends to help again.After the success of last year, we hope that you can offer your support again.
